“We understand that businesses, particularly in developing countries, face numerous hurdles to growth.”

Dear Future-minded Reader,
Welcome to a new edition of Future-minded, where we once again focus on our work in the agribusiness, food, and forestry sectors. In a previous edition, we explored the vital role of decarbonizing the agri-value chain. While climate change continues to be a pressing challenge—disrupting harvests, industries, and livelihoods—this issue delves deeper into the difficult paths agri and forestry businesses must navigate and how FMO is here to provide support.
Take Kees Huizinga, owner of Kischenzi Farms in Ukraine, for example. In his interview, "War and Wheat," Kees shares the immense struggles his farm has faced due to the ongoing war. From logistical nightmares to the heartbreaking loss of workers, his story is a testament to resilience. He constantly adapts to changing circumstances, including becoming more self-reliant in energy through solar panels, biogas digesters, and other methods. At FMO, we’ve been assisting Huizinga by restructuring loans and we continue to look for ways to support Ukraine’s long-term stability and economic recovery.
We understand that businesses, particularly in developing countries, face numerous hurdles to growth. Through initiatives like market creation, FMO helps companies like Vietnam’s Camimex become investment-ready. As SNV’s Alex Downs shares, this mangrove shrimp company’s journey to sustainability is one we aim to replicate across other regions, demonstrating the power of nature-based solutions.
HPW Fresh & Dry’s story is another example of success through partnership. As a leader in the global dried fruit market, this Ghana-based company has seen both highs and lows. In this edition, we show how collaboration, innovation, and especially a commitment to sustainability has allowed the company to bring fresh flavors from Ghana to supermarkets around the world, while also uplifting an entire region as the largest employer in the district. FMO has provided HPW not only with a loan but also with a technical assistance grant for its expansion into Burkina Faso, aligning with our market-creation approach to reach smaller subsidiaries and smallholder farmers in more challenging environments.
Our role extends beyond financing. We also facilitate important conversations and connections. In June, we hosted a roundtable addressing the sharp decline in cocoa production in West Africa, a crisis that sent shockwaves through the chocolate industry. By bringing together stakeholders from across the value chain, we sought to uncover solutions that benefit everyone, especially the farmers most affected. Looking ahead, we know that lessons from other regions—such as Ecuador’s favorable farming conditions—can inform our work and offer potential solutions for the cocoa, coffee, and tea sectors.
We hope this edition inspires you and shows that, together, we can help businesses overcome challenges and thrive, no matter how uncertain the path ahead may seem.
Warm regards,
Huib-Jan de Ruijter and Peter Maila, Co-Chief Investment Officers at FMO
